Jessie Willcox Smith moments...

Each week, I am going to do a Jessie Willcox Smith moment. It will be one of her beautiful and tender illustrations that reflect something around me that week. I find her work so sweet and reflections of the innocence of childhood days gone by. It reminds us to be in touch with that child we once were.....

This weekend I will be out watering the garden.....

“The Secret Garden was what Mary called it when she was thinking of it. She liked the name, and she liked still more the feeling that when its beautiful old walls shut her in no one knew where she was. It seemed almost like being shut out of the world in some fairy place. The few books she had read and liked had been fairy-story books, and she had read of secret gardens in some of the stories. Sometimes people went to sleep in them for a hundred years, which she had thought must be rather stupid. She had no intention of going to sleep, and, in fact, she was becoming wider awake every day which passed at Misselthwaite.”

  1. I love her artwork and this little gardening gal is so sweet.
I have just recently purchased an older copy of "The Secret Garden" which was illustrated by Tasha Tudor. Love that book too.
I will look forward to your Jessie Willcox Smith moments. How fun!

  3. The illustration is just precious Heidi. I too love her work. As for The Secret Garden that has always been one of my favorite books ever. I still have mine from when I was little and I still reread from time to time. The iron gate that you have has always reminded me of that story. :) Enjoy your time in the garden!

  9. Hi, Heidi, from Vicki in Southern California of the U.S. where we are currently very dry and hot. The hills look like they could burn to a crisp so we have a fear of early wildfire as it is only early July and not the fall, which is more typical; just no rain for so, so long; the poor wildlife...deer are bold when they wouldn't normally be because they are so thirsty, appearing in residential backyards, on a road in front of you at dusk as they cross in search of sustenance.

Anyway, catching up to your last three or four posts and enjoying them thoroughly. I followed your link to Miss Jessie and will read more about her.

Your cottage is so delightful and must be such a treasure; how wonderful to have a getaway place. I have been battling cancer which came out of nowhere and I've longed for such a place to rest and recover, regain...after major surgery and the trauma of deadly disease. Did you ever read Anne Lindbergh's GIFT FROM THE SEA? At times I thought it selfish that she removed herself from her family to self-reflect but I think there are times when we feel very protective about the need for renewal and new directions, and some of us can only do that when we have quiet and fewer distactions. It's great you and Jos can do that together.

Take care and continue to have an enjoyable series of weekend adventures...

  10. Well, you looked like that little girl when you were small.
Your picture in the plaid dress looks like her. Remember that one?
    Love you, Mom
